WISCONSIN LEGAL NOTICES

The structure and election process for the Supreme Court in Wisconsin is defined by a combination of constitutional provisions and state regulations. The court comprises seven justices who serve 10-year terms. These justices are elected during statewide, non-partisan elections held in April. This approach aims to reduce political bias and ensure that judicial candidates focus on their qualifications rather than party affiliation.

In the event of a vacancy on the court, such as through retirement or resignation, the governor has the authority to appoint a replacement justice. However, this appointed justice is required to stand for election to secure a full 10-year term. This election occurs during the next spring election, provided that there isn’t already another justice’s election on the ballot, thereby allowing voters to consider the qualifications of the appointee without the distraction of multiple simultaneous judicial races.

Importantly, the Wisconsin Constitution also includes a provision that limits justices to running for election one at a time, which prevents multiple justices from being on the ballot in the same election cycle. This ensures that voters can focus on each individual candidate, enhancing transparency and accountability within the state's highest court.

Overall, this system is designed to uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary while ensuring that justices remain accountable to the public through regular electoral processes.
